Monte Carlo Path Tracing for Atmospheric Sound Propagation
Using rendering techniques for the simulation of sound.
For my Master’s thesis I implemented a GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo Path Tracer for the simulation of sound propagation in the atmosphere, including factors such as humidity, ambient pressure, ambient temperature and wind in a stratified atmospheric profile.
This allows for the creation of such beautiful plots as the one shown below, or actually useful things such as minimizing the noise impact near airports by choosing runways based on current weather data.
Since I am unaware of other works out there using Monte Carlo path tracing for atmospheric sound propagation, I wanted to upload my thesis here.
